Greencane is a New Zealand company founded by Geoff and Helen Arden. They produce completely plastic-free and compostable bamboo toilet paper, kitchen towels, and tissues for home and commercial use.
How did Greencane begin?
The Ardens first came up with the concept of Greencane Paper in 2008 after they came across a local forest being felled for pulp. They started asking themselves why trees, which take up to 30 years to grow, are used to make such a low-value product like toilet paper. This inspired them to look into sustainable alternatives like bamboo and sugarcane which only take one year to grow. And from this Greencane was born!
Plastic-Free Innovation
Since then Greencane has remained committed to a plastic-free and fully compostable approach.
This began with retail packaging that used plant-based clear cellophane in place of conventional plastic. The next step was replacing cellotape with a bamboo-based tape. More recently, Greencane introduced their naked range—products with no individual packaging at all (naked toilet paper available at Commonsense!) The latest development is the introduction of bamboo dispensers designed for business use, once again offering a sustainable alternative to the traditional plastic option.
Bamboo is a remarkable renewable resource, growing to harvestable size in just one year—far faster than the 15+ years it takes for trees used in traditional toilet paper. As a powerful carbon sink, bamboo absorbs up to four times more carbon dioxide than trees, and its cultivation helps prevent soil erosion on hillsides, unlike forestry, which can scar landscapes and pollute waterways. Worldwide, an area of forest the size of Sri Lanka is chopped down every year, and a quarter of those trees go into paper products. By choosing bamboo over trees for single-use products like toilet paper, we can help curb deforestation.
Greencane’s products contain no bleach, inks or fragrances. They are also GMO & PFAS free and vegan friendly. They’re friendly to your plumbing and are safe for septic tanks. Best of all, you’re saving trees each time you shop.
